- Summary:
- This poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Bill Clinton and the United States Congress, and to comment on the most serious problems facing the nation, especially those facing women, and the pending sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones against then-Arkansas governor Bill Clinton. Questions about the lawsuit centered on the scheduled May 1998 trial date and who was telling the truth. Marking the 25th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade, a series of questions was asked on abortion. Topics covered the availability of abortion services, differences between first, second, and third trimester abortions, fetus viability, 24-hour waiting periods, parental consent for those under 18, and whether respondents supported a constitutional amendment making abortion legal. Additional questions covered the feelings of women who have had abortions, abortion as a form of birth control, partial birth abortions, political party stances on the issue, drug alternatives such as RU-486, and prescription drugs to prevent egg fertilization. Background information on respondents includes age, race, ethnicity, sex, education, political party, political orientation, family income, marital status, employment status, voter registration and participation history, age of children in household, and knowledge of persons who had had abortions....
