- Biography/History:
- Bernes was a surveyor and math teacher at the Lycée Louis le Grand in Paris; he was involved in the beginnings of geometrography, a French branch of geometry in the nineteenth century. Loubens appears to be employed as an enginneer during the construction of a railroad line and was perhaps a former srudent or colleague of Bernes.
- Summary:
- The letters offer the impressions of a Frenchman on both Texas and America in general. Topics include comments on the ongoing Franco-Prussian war, a description of Calvert, Texas and Texas in general, and the increase in prejudice against blacks since the emancipation of the slaves.
