The catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale (t. 204, 1969) states, in reference to each work: "Par le P. Gilles Vaudelin, d'après Barbier." Marcel Cohen, in Le français en 1700 d'après le témoignage de Gile Vaudelin (Paris, 1946) states: "Le Père Gile Vaudelin ... inventeur d'un alphabet phonétique ... se décidait [en 1713] à publier (anonymement) son système et, en 1715, il faisait imprimer un livre édifiant où il le mettait en pratique."
