Summary:
The collected volume Gustav Shpet's Contribution to Philosophy and Cultural Theory-edited by Galin Tihanov-seeks to expose Shpet's work to a Western audience, to describe and evaluate critically Shpet's contributions to philosophy and the theory of culture and to provide a platform for further discussion. The volume provides a rounded view of Shpet's work with biographical, cultural-historical, and analytical discussion. The inclusion of an excellent and thorough bibliography as well as translated excerpts add considerably to its value. The scholars assembled for the volume are a distinguished and knowledgeable group, but a group interestingly varied in approach and opinions. Without exception the contributions are extremely well-versed not only in Shpet scholarship, but in the study of related figures including Husserl, the Russian Formalists, Russian Orthodox philosophy, and in the period as a whole. There are at least three fields in which the volume is an important contribution: as a contribution to Russian intellectual and cultural history it is unprecedented and unique and it will bring an important, but neglected figure into play; as a contribution to debates in semiotics and the philosophy of language-and related discussion in literary theory-it represents a unique body of work; and finally, the volume presents outstanding work on phenomenological issues and thus it is relevant to philosophers with an interest in phenomenology and Husserl in particular.
Galin Tihanov teaches comparative literature and intellectual history at the University of Manchaster where he is co-director of the Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures. His publications include The Master and the Slave: Lukc̀s, Bakhtin, and the Ideas of Their Time (2000), two books on Bulgarian literature (1994 and 1998), co-edited volumes on Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle (2000 and 2004) and on Robert Musil (2007), and the guest-edited issue Russian Avant-Garde Photography and Visual Culture of the journal, History of Photography (2000), as well as numerous articles on German, Russian, and East European intellectual and cultural history, and on various issues in comparatives literature.
