- Summary:
- Only a handful of Titian's final paintings remain in existence, dispersed through galleries around the world. And there are no dates or documentation attached to any of them. We don't know precisely when they were painted, why and for whom. One of them was discovered only relatively recently, hanging in a remote monastery in the Czech Republic.
- But the only one to have remained in Venice is the last one, the final Pietà in the Accademia, where we see the once proud artist on his knees, bald and half-naked, peering at the body of the dead Christ-crawling towards God and his own death. It's a painting I feel I've been waiting all my life to see.
