Summary:
As the Soviet Union sought to incorporate Lithuania and the other Baltic states at the end of World War II, armed guerilla resistance broke out among Lithuanians resisting Soviet occupation that was to continue for nearly a decade. This is the memoir of one of those partisans, Juozas Luksa, written while the resistance was still ongoing, although Luksa was by then living in Paris and working with the American Central Intelligence Agency. In the memoirs, he describes his transformation from a student of architecture to guerilla fighter and details his military experiences, as well as the stories of battles and operations he heard described by others. Although a previous English edition of the memoirs--published in 1975 as Fighters for Freedom--exists, this is the first unabridged English edition.
