Summary:
Berend, a professor of European studies at UCLA who survived five regime changes and two revolutions in Hungary, a Hungarian prison, and a German concentration camp, recounts his life from his childhood in Budapest in the 1930s to his move to America. He describes his experiences as Hungary became an ally of Hitler and established a Nazi system, its brief period of democracy, Soviet occupation and the communist regime, and the new democracy, for Western readers who have an oversimplified view of the Cold War. He also traces his education, travels, and career as a historian. There is no index. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
