Summary:
Two city-bred teenage best friends are sent to a backward mountainous region for Maoist re-ducation. Both fall in love with the same girl, daughter of the local tailor, and offer her glimpses of forbidden Western culture from a hidden stash of books. Set in the early 1970s, during the later stages of China's Cultural Revolution.
