- Biography/History:
- One of the major papal families in Italy in the 16th century, and the predominant noble family in Siena starting around the 11th century, mostly consisting of merchants, moneylenders, government figures, and church figures. Notable members of the family include Pope Pius II (originally Enea Silvio Piccolomini) and Pope Pius III (Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini), and many cardinals and archbishops, along with holders of lesser positions, were also of the same family.
- Summary:
- Collection of mostly notarial and legal documents addressed to or relating to the Piccolomini family, along with two later covers with Phillipps manuscript numbers on them (Folder 103 and Folder 104, not cataloged individually) stored in 4 boxes (Folder 1-Folder 104) with the exception of 21 oversize documents (Folder 105-Folder 125). The documents are mostly in Latin, with some Italian, and are dated from the 12th century to the 18th century, with most written in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many of the documents relate to the Church and papal intrigues, but most cover legal topics. Document types include records from lawsuits, arbitrations, petitions, grants, indulgences, bulls, and deeds. Most of the documents discuss or originate from Siena. The documents cover a variety of topics, such as ecclesiastical or political nominations, but the majority deal with real estate. Many of the documents contain notarial signets. Notes from the 18th century relate to genealogical and historical research.
