Extracted from the Report of the Secretary of War for 1855, issued as a part of House Executive document no. 1, pt. 2 (34th Congress, 1st session, 1855-1856). The accompanying atlas constitutes pt. 4 of the same document. On pages 152-168 are two letters of Capt. Rufus Ingalls reporting on an overland march to the Pacific coast with a winter stopover at Salt Lake City in the years 1854-1855. Map no. [30] in the atlas is based on a map made by Ingalls of the route taken.
