- Summary:
- Travel diary of William Bugg of Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, England, and his journey to London, January 2-25, 1830. The volume includes a table of contents, followed by an engraving of a view of London (pasted in facing the title page). Inserted in the diary is an unbound photograph of a woman--verso inscribed in pencil, possibly a later hand "Susan? Bugg, neé Bell." Bugg records numerous sites from his trip to London, including London Bridge, the King's palace, and Hyde Park. In addition, Bugg notes witnessing a fire and the bustling activity at various markets. Bugg made his journey (the first of his family to go to London) with Master Joseph, who brought Bugg to the cattle market of Smithfield, where Master Joseph sold his cattle--seemingly the purpose of the trip. Bugg describes his encounters with the buildings, parks, gardens, markets, and landmarks he visited, with details such as dimensions and number of people.
