- The site of Hitler's announcement of Austria's annexation to the German Reich in 1938 provides the locale for an examination of anti-Semitism there 50 years later. Professor Schuster, exiled to Oxford after the Anschluss, has returned to live in Vienna only to commit suicide just before leaving again for England. His widow, his brother, and several housemaids ponder his life and death and what they mean. Is the past really behind us? Does history threaten to repeat itself or have things never in fact changed?
