Summary:
This book explores the governance of religious diversity in Western immigration countries. It focuses on changes in the political, legal, and social responses to religious diversity that have resulted from increased international migration and the public visibility of new religious minorities in Europe, North America, and Australia. Contributors examine contemporary theoretical debates about international migration, religious diversity and integration policy, and present original in-depth analyses of specific national contexts, allowing readers to observe social forces at work in the governance of religious diversity. These national case studies are put into comparative perspective through an examination of both international normative frameworks for policy-formulation and the impact of contemporary world events on public discourse about the relationship between religious diversity and migration.
Bramadat and Koenig have gathered together a team of world class scholars to explore one of the most pressing issues in debates around immigration and multiculturalism, that is, how can we integrate people of many faiths into democratic, secular societies? At a time when religion has become a burning question for multicultural democracies around the world, their groundbreaking analysis of the theoretical issues associated with religion and migration and their survey of seven different national case studies addresses one of the most important lacunae in the literature on liberal demoncracy, multiculturalism, and immigrant integration.
Relationships between religions and states have presented numerous challenges for centuries. Drawing upon an exceptional gathering of expertise, this book provides comparative and theoretical views on contemporary religion-state dynamics. National histories and current contexts, migration-driven diversities, post-9/11 debates, transnational connections, and global processes are impressively interwoven in this state-of-the-art volume.
