- Summary:
- Over the last ten years, Purdue University has undertaken a culture-change initiative that is unprecedented in American higher education. This work represents the first chapter in the story of the fundamental shift in campus culture that has been required to prepare Purdue's students to act as culturally competent global citizens.
- American universities' student bodies are increasingly diverse in ethnicity, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and religion. At the same time, the faculty and staff, the stable base of universities and the creators of their culture for learning, are slower to diversify. This work is innovative in that it focuses on this important population-the faculty and staff in the colleges and schools of Purdue.
- The culture change taking place at Purdue is dramatic, although the change process itself is gradual. From a mostly white, very male, Midwestern institution focusing on the sciences and engineering, Purdue has moved toward becoming consciously global. The University has worked to create a welcoming and supportive environment for persons from many cultures, both within the United States and from international communities. This work tells that story: how it started, why it succeeded (when many other institutions have tried and failed), and what is yet to be done.
