Summary:
The Future of Higher Education explores how policy, pedagogy and the student experience are shaped and re-shaped by newly emerging learning landscapes in higher education, enabling university staff to place their own work within a wider theoretical framework and to develop their own understandings of some of the key controversies that surround teaching and learning in higher education.
Part 1 examines some of the key policy issues that are influencing the development of learning landscapes in higher education, including academic freedom, architecture and the use of space and teaching and learning for sustainable development.
Part 2 explores how these emerging policies, and the need for higher education institutions to respond to them, have produced a radical re-evaluation of what higher education is and what its learning landscapes might be, focussing on the work of Educational Development Units, strategies for Continued Professional Development (CPD) and technology enhanced learning.
Part 3 considers some of the factors that shape the student experience within the learning landscape of contemporary higher education by providing an analysis of the impact of the stretched academy on mature students, the use of student intelligence and the emergence of the student as producer.
The Future of Higher Education will be invaluable to all those studying and researching this field. In addition, it will be of interest to university staff, especially those following the PGCertHE and other programmes within institutional CPD frameworks.
