- Summary:
- Today even policymakers acknowledge that the circumstances surrounding illegal migration differ for men and women. Such awareness, however, often merely manifests itself in the political discourse as an oversimplified dichotomy: migrant women as being at risk and migrant men as posing a threat. In contrast to their prevailing existence, migrating illegally or remaining illegal in a foreign country may be an attractive opportunity for both men and women. This incisive book illustrates such a reality through studies that span the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to cover a breadth of geography including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Pakistan, Malaysia, the Horn of Africa, the United States and Mexico. As the volume demonstrates, the conditions that people face before migrating legally or illegally must be just as thoughtfully considered as those analysed after migration. Book jacket.
