Summary:

Today even policymakers acknowledge that the circumstances surrounding illegal migration differ for men and women. Such awareness, however, often merely manifests itself in the political discourse as an oversimplified dichotomy: migrant women as being at risk and migrant men as posing a threat. In contrast to their prevailing existence, migrating illegally or remaining illegal in a foreign country may be an attractive opportunity for both men and women. This incisive book illustrates such a reality through studies that span the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to cover a breadth of geography including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Pakistan, Malaysia, the Horn of Africa, the United States and Mexico.
