- Briedis, who divides his time between Vilnius and Vancouver, BC (where he earned a doctorate in human geography) points out that his hometown marks the geographical center of Europe. He traces the history and literary views of the Lithuanian capital from its origins as a pagan city until the 14th century, through the loss of its Jews and other citizens in World War II, to its postwar annexation into the Soviet bloc and entry into the European Union in 2004. Despite the postwar amnesia of the city toward its past foreign invasions and potential, he touts its current revitalization.
