Summary:
Rigoletto, the hunchbacked jester, offends the Duke's courtiers. Rigoletto then mocks Count Monterone when he appeals to the Duke for the return of his dishonored daughter. In return, Monterone curses Rigoletto. Later, Rigoletto's daughter, Gilda, returns from her convent schooling. She soon falls in love with a poor student, who is really the Duke in disguise. The courtiers take their revenge on Rigoletto by abducting Gilda and taking her to the Duke, assisted by a blindfold Rigoletto, who thinks he is helping the abduction of Countess Ceprano. Rigoletto desperately tries to convince his daughter that the Duke is not a man of honor. Meanwhile, he hires an assassin to kill the Duke. However, Gilda dresses as a man and the assassin kills her instead of the Duke.
