Summary:
Matthew Roberts provides a new history of the mass political movements that came of age in urban England between the Great Reform Act of 1832 and the outbreak of the First World War. In the recent past many of the traditional historical interpretations of these political movements have been challenged, and in many cases overturned. This book offers a critical introduction to the exciting and controversial new approaches to: citizenship and democratization, Chartism, parliamentary reform, Gladstonian Liberalism, popular Conservatism, the independent Labour movement.
Drawing on the latest research, and placing particular emphasis on the crucial role played by political ideas in defining and mobilizing popular support for these mass movements, this is an invaluable text for students and scholars alike.
