Summary:
Copy of an imperial cloth-making patent (gewöhnd-schutz Patent; f. 1v), dated Vienna, 15 May 1713, issued by Emperor Charles VI, protecting the long-standing privileges (schon vor alters hergebrachte Ordtnung und Freijheiten; f. 1r) of the linen, fustian, muslin and cloth weavers (Lein- Parchet- Mässelän- und Zeugweber) in Lower Austria, issued in response to the submission of a petition in this regard by the guild-masters (Zöchmaister) and members of those trades to the Lower Austrian government (beij unserer Nieder-Österreichischen Regierung und Cammer; f. 1r). He refers to the privileges having already been confirmed and renewed (verneuert und bestättet) on 26 January in the same year. The document specifies that anyone who trespasses against these privileges will have to pay a fine of 10 mark pure gold (zehen Markh löttigen goldes), half of it to Charles's treasury (in unser Cammer) and half to the said weavers (f. 1v). The document was signed by 4 officials, 2 on behalf of Lower Austria, Johann Jacob, Baron (Freijh.) of Kriechbaum (Kriechbaumb), Vice President (Vice Statthalter), and Joseph Joachim (Joachimb) Alexander von Schmidlin, Chancellor (Cantzler); and 2 apparently on behalf of the Electoral Council (under the rubric: commissio domini electi imperatoris in consilio), Johann Jacob, Count (Graf) of Berenburg, and Bernhardt Franz von Schick. (The signatures appear to be copied, written in the same hand as the rest of the document.)
