Summary:
Harbour Island has been at the forefront of Bahamian history since the Eleuthera Adventurers first settled in the Bahamas at nearby Preacher's Cave. In its earliest years it ranked with Nassau as the country's most important settlement, while its beautiful harbour encouraged trade and provided shelter for privateers, fishermen, and wreckers alike.
When the Spanish conquered New Providence in the eighteenth century it was Harbour Islanders that provided the base and the men for Colonel Andrew Deveaux to relieve the capital city.
The beautiful setting and Loyalist architecture have long attracted visitors to Harbour Island. Originally frequented by winter escapists, it is now the habitat of millionaires and celebrities, with many hotels and elegant homes lining the justly famous Pink Sand Beach.
This is the only authoritative account of Harbour Island's history and its people. Long overdue, Harbour Island Story details the many events and personalities in the island's long history, and will be an enduring source of knowledge for Bahamians and visitors alike.
