- Summary:
- The importance of the reception history of biblical texts has received growing recognition in recent years. Perspectives on the Passion provides an engaging and illuminating addition to the field, with its particular focus on the use, influence and impact of the passion narratives in art, music, literature and theology. Maximizing the interdisciplinary nature of reception history, Christine Joynes has gathered together a wide range of contributions from scholars across the Humanities. The volume examines material from a variety of contexts and media, and includes over 40 illustrations.
- Ulrich Luz considers the passion in art, highlighting the significant contribution of artists to biblical interpretation. Emma Hornby illustrates musical exegesis through her analysis of Good Friday chants. Peter Hawkins examines literary portrayals of the Gethsemane 'Moment', and Jaime Lara discusses Christian cannibalism and human sacrifice, relating images of the passion to the conversion of the Aztecs. Through these and other such innovative and incisive contributions, significant questions are raised about the interpretation of the passion narratives throughout history.
