Summary:
Since the publication of the first edition of the Handbook of Human Immunology a decade ago, major scientific achievements have directly contributed to an increased understanding of the complexities of the human immune system in health and disease. Whether as a result of the sequencing of the entire human genome, or of technological advancements, several new components of the immune system have been revealed, along with new technologies for their measurement and evaluation.
Similar in format to the bestselling original, this edition of the Handbook of Human Immunology begins with an overview of the immune system. It then includes a discussion on statistics in immunological testing, delves into clinically relevant immunological parameters, and clarifies the basic principles underlying immune system assays, and applications and interpretations of immune tests.
Featuring Six New Chapters and Contributions from Twelve New Authors, the Handbook of Human Immunology, Second Edition- Explores the significant components of the innate and adaptive human immune system, Describes specific human conditions and contemporary methods for assessing them, Analyzes the relevance of specific measurements and potential pitfalls involved in their interpretation, Provides a useful, up-to-date reference for laboratory evaluation of the immune system and immune disorders, Emphasizes the molecular basis of normal and pathological immune responses, Includes new information on cell receptors, accessory molecules, cytokines, growth factors, and interleukins, along with their application in diagnosing and monitoring various diseases.
This new edition provides several new tables including two that cover more than double the number of recognized "clusters of differentiation" (CD's) on the surface of leukocytes and associated cells than the first edition of the Handbook. New chapters include practical discussions on the statistics of immunological testing, guidelines for CD4 testing in HIV infection, measurements of cytokines, characterization of the T cell repertoire, and a comprehensive treatise of immunological components and autoimmune disease in the gastrointestinal tract, among other up-to-date immunological tests and diseases.
