Summary:
J.M. Synge, one of Ireland's greatest dramatists, travelled through a now vanished world in the dying days of the nine-teenth century. In this, his masterpiece of travel writing, he gives us a portrait of a long, forgotten time and shows us that 'one has to go a little way only to reach people and places that are typical of Connemara' and the Aran Islands.
Synge's narrative invites us into the cottages of the people so that we can relish the warmth of their hearts and the richness of their stories. In his words we hear the call of the wild, and our guides are the fishermen, mountainy men and the people of the bogs.
