Summary:
Scholars conventionally argue that global cities originated during the socio-economic transformations caused by globalization during the 1970s and 1980s. This volume provides a fresh perspective on these debates. Looking at urban municipal governments and the problems they have historically faced between 1850 and 2000, the book particularly focuses on the networks and connections formed by and between municipalities in different countries and continents. The contributors show how, through their extensive transnational journeys, urban municipal governments had a major impact on the modern world's capacity to identity its social problems and devise universal solutions.
