Referred to by herself and by others as Katherine Loder. She was a graduate of Dickinson College and a Ph.D student in the Romance Languages Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Loder wrote her dissertation on the 19th-century French author and journalist Léon Gozlan. She travelled to France in 1939 to gather literary and biographical information about her subject. Loder's dissertation was entitled The life and novels of Léon Gozlan: a representative of literary cross currents in the generation of Balzac (1943). She was awarded the American Legion Award of Merit for distinguished service in 1950.

Summary:

A collection of papers gathered by Loder during her dissertation research. Most of the items in this collection pertain to the biographical information about Gozlan and his family, including copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates not only for Léon Gozlan but also for his daughter, his son-in-law, and his grandchildren. Two items are Loder's letters to priests in Marseilles and Paris asking for the baptism records of Léon Gozlan and of his daughter Agathe Léontine respectively. Loder obtained a copy and a typewritten birth record of Léon Gozlan from the Archives in Marseilles. Loder also made handwritten copies of the birth certificate of Gozlan's daughter, of a certificate of her marriage to Charles Jerome Alphonse Duval, of the birth certificate of Gozlan's grandson Léon Charles Duval, and of a death certificate of Gozlan's son in law. In addition, the administrative offices of the 9th Arrondissement provided printed copies of the death certificates of Gozlan and of his daughter as well as birth certificates of Gozlan's two grandchildren. There are also letters regarding the death of Léon Gozlan from the offices of the 9th Arrondissement in Paris and from abbé Bellamy, who worked in the church where the writer was buried. The collection also includes a small amount of literary material, primarily Gozlan's detailed review of the works of Charles Camille Doucet, a playwright and contemporary of Gozlan. The review describes in detail many of Doucet's plays and offers critical evaluations. This review is available in a manuscript original, signed by Gozlan, and as a typewritten reproduction. This review article does not appear in Loder's bibliography of Gozlan's published works. Internal references to Doucet's Le fruit défendu (1857) and Charles Le Feuve's Anciennes Maisons de Paris (1857-1859) suggest that this article was likely composed after 1857. There is also a printed caricature portrait from the humor periodical Le Charivari from the year 1839. One item is a short printed work entitled Bedouck ou le talisman de Balzac (1925) by Marcel Bouteron. The chapbook is signed by the author for Katherine Loder. There are also two undated postcards addressed from Bouteron to Loder.
