Summary:
Acred Power, Sacred Space presents a survey of church architecture that is unlike any other. Jeanne Halgren Kilde focuses not on the buildings themselves, but on the dynamic character of Christianity and how church buildings shape and influence the religion. The primary function of these buildings, she argues, is to represent and reify three different types of power: divine power, personal power, and the social power between the laity and clergy. Each type intersects with notions of Christian creed, cult, and code and is represented spatially and materially in church buildings.
Kilde explores these categories chronologically, from the early church to the twentieth century. She considers the form, organization, and use of worship rooms; the locations of churches; and the interaction between churches and the wider culture. Neither mere witnesses to transformations of religious thought nor simple backgrounds for religious practice, church buildings emerge from this study as dynamic participants in religious change and gold mines of information on Christianity itself.
