"Since the decease of Dr. Watts, many of his Psalms and hymns ... have been much altered, both in sentiment and diction; but these alterations the present editor has carefully avoided. Instead ... he has endeavoured to restore him to his original purity ... A few variations, however ... have become necessary. In some instances, where the original version is local; it is here made to apply to Christian worship in general; and where it is particularly adapted to the British nation and government, it is here varied and suited to the state and events of our own country. ..."--Introduction, p. vi-vii. Two states of gatherings B-Q of Hymns and spiritual songs noted. In the first state of gathering B pages 11, 14, 16, 17, 19, and 22 are misnumbered 13, 16, 18, 19, 21, and 24. I the second state these pages a correctly numbered. In all gatherings B-Q of the second state, the symbol denoting sharp keys has be changed to an asterisk.
