The "Gentleman of New York" is Washington Irving. The biographical sketch was included in Irving's Biographies and miscellanies (New York, 1869) and in the "Biographical sketches" appended to his Salmagundi (New York, 1897).

Another edition published by Edward Earle in 1815 has 261 p., lacks imprint on title page, with undated imprint present on added engraved title page.
