- The biographical notice of Captain James Lawrence, p. 17-32, is by Washington Irving, and was taken from the Analectic magazine, Philadelphia.
- In a copy held by the American Antiquarian Society, the poem "Tribute to the memory of the brave, though successless, defenders of the United States frigate Chesapeake" is signed in pencil: CS. This is probably Charles Sprague (1791-1875). See his Poetical and prose writings, new ed., Boston, 1876, p. viii.

- Two states of gathering 5 noted. In the first, the letter on p. 40, dated Aug. 18 and addressed to the Committee of the Proprietors of Dr. Barnard's Meeting-house, names three members of the committee. In the second state, seven committee members are named.
- Two states of gathering 8 noted. The second has a tailpiece on p. 64, not present in the first state.
- BAL characterizes as "State A" copies with the first state of gathering 5 and the first state of gathering 8, and as "State B" copies with the second state of each gathering. According to BAL, "Intermediates have been seen, possibly produced by mixed sheets."
