"The completion of the second volume of this work having been long suspended on account of an important article which was delayed much longer than was at first expected, it was judged proper to begin the third volume with the article Printing, and considerable progress was made in the printing of the volume before the second was finished. Some of the original articles extended to a greater length than the room allotted for them. The second volume therefore was closed with the article Philosophist. This made it necessary to prefix to the third volume a series of forty-eight pages in order to bring forward the subjects which preceded the article Printing."--v. 3, p. 48, 1st numbered count.
