Holding Federalists accountable for the Black Snake affair on Lake Champlain in 1808, in which three men "were all killed at Burlington, on Wednesday the 3d instant ... by a party of insurgents" engaged in smuggling goods into Canada. The author warns that "by neglecting to attend the poll, or by voting for the Federal ticket, you will entail on your country all the horrors of slavery, oppression and murder."
