- Variously attributed to William Duane, Jesse Higgins and William Sampson. For conclusive attribution to Jesse Higgins, a wealthy Delaware landowner, see "Memoirs of a senator from Pennsylvania, Jonathan Roberts, 1771-1854" in the Pennsylvania magazine of history & biography, v. 62 (April 1938), p. 213-223, and Scharf, J. Thomas. History of Delaware, 1609-1888 (1888), p. 959-960.
- The American Antiquarian Society copy is annotated in a contemporary hand, "Printed by Wm. Duane, Phila." The second edition (Shaw & Shoemaker 8348) bears imprint "Philadelphia: Printed by B. Graves, for W. Duane. 1805" and is copyright by Duane on June 8, 1805. However, Scharf's account includes a letter from Duane to Higgins, dated Washington, D.C. Nov. 18, 1804, stating "I brought it with me to this place, where I can under my own eye see it printed ... In about ten days I shall begin to advertise it so as to prepare the minds of readers for its reception."
