Summary:
With the application of GIS methodologies to spatial data, researchers can now identify patterns of occurrence for many social problems including health-issues and crime. Furthermore, since this type of data also contains clues as to the underlying causes of social problems, it can be used to make well-educated and consequently, more effective policy decisions.
GIS and Evidence-Based Policy Making focuses on the conceptualization and implementation of new GIS methodologies to identify spatial patterns in social phenomena. It also examines the creation of transnational spatial-data infrastructures as well as the development of geodemographics.
Clearly illustrating the value of adopting a spatial perspective in deciding policy, this groundbreaking reference-: Considers issues of organization, including the use of technology to involve the public in decision making, Addressees both data and methodology issues, Stresses the importance of location as a key factor in policy making at the national level, Explains techniques to allow for the active debate of spatial policy decisions, Provides policymakers with powerful tools to integrate data from multiple sources and assess cumulative impacts. GIS and Evidence-Based Policy Making provides valuable techniques that will allow for the availability of evidence to the public, which will encourage constitutents to actdively debate the spatial consequences of individual policies.
