- Summary:
- The Presbyterian church is active throughout Ireland and is the largest Protestant denomination in Northern Ireland. Contemporary Protestant identity in Ireland is sometimes misunderstood. Historically there has been a radical dissenting tradition amongst some Irish Presbyterians, though in recent times Presbyterians have tended more toward the status quo. Presbyterians in Ireland addresses their politics and culture, including that of the Ulster-Scots and the Irish, social and moral issues affecting Presbyterianism, the roles of women, the influence of life history and geographical location, educational issues and inter-church relations, the Orange Order, the Ministry and the future.
- The author approaches the study as a Presbyterian, a sociologist and a feminist. Her data draws on interviews with over 100 Ministers and individuals from 25 different congregations. The purpose of the study is to promote understanding of Presbyterians today in the North and South of Ireland, and to give voice to the views of ordinary members.
