Summary:
MATRIX.
MATRIX. Gender, Relations, Revisions interrogates works of art from the Collection of Contemporary Art of the City of Vienna with regard to the relational category of gender. Central to the exhibition is an engagement with closely interrelated key themes, such as bodies and body-images, the construction of identities, the staging of the self, representation, and not least, also the history of art. In the present catalogue, brief introductions vividly illustrate individual works. Rozsika Parker and Griselda Pollock's "Painted Ladies," an essay that has come to be regarded as a classic, which is reprinted here, and Anja Zimmermann's original contribution "What Was Feminist Art?" embed the works in the larger art-historical and theoretical context. Through this, a network of varied references ensues that permits a new view of aspects of gender constructions and the everyday, experienced relations connected with them.
