Summary:
This book provides a unique portrait of the changing nature of entrepreneurship over a thirty year period in a 'low' enterprise area. Using data from interviews with over 900 entrepreneurs, it also compares and contrasts new businesses in a 'low' enterprise area with areas with 'medium' and 'high' entrepreneurship rates. By examining spatial and temporal changes in the characteristics of new businesses, this book is able to empirically chart differences in new business strategy, performance, assistance, finance, and entrepreneurial characteristics. Written clearly with up-to-date literature reviews, this book is for those interested in regional economic development, the evolution of entrepreneurship, and bigger questions such as the limits and value of enterprise policy and the development of an 'enterprise culture'.
