Summary:
The performance of the construction industry has been a constant source of criticism and review for many years, both in the UK and a variety of other countries, and this has culminated in a series of major initiatives aimed at changing the combative nature of the industry to one that effectively provides the service clients say they want. There has been reasonable consensus on the issues involved, but not on how they can be addressed in a coherent way.
Based on extensive research, including workshops in five countries, a seven part infinity model has been developed and is presented in this new publication. This has made it possible to set out challenges for the various key stakeholders and to make clear proposals regarding progressive implementation drawing from various national experiences.
The seven key areas for action are: a holistic notion of construction, a shared vision amongst stakeholders, a balance between markets and social capital, dynamic decisions and information, evolving knowledge and attitudes, awareness of the systemic contribution of construction, promotion of the full value delivered to society. A range of international experts, under the editorship of Professor Peter Barrett, have each taken one of the seven areas and provided an extended contribution from their specialist perspective. The book finishes with examples of 'revalued' construction and practical actions for the various stakeholders.
Published in conjunction with CIB, the book will be of interest to policy makers in many countries, as well as clients and procurers of construction services and the academic research community.
