Summary:
The Elsevier book Earth's Oldest Rocks provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of early Earth, from planetary accretion and the formation of very early crust, through to development of protocratons with depleted lithospheric keels by c. 3.2 Ga, in a series of 42 papers written by 80 of the world's leading experts. The book is divided into an Introductory chapter on early Earth history, a chapter on planetary accretion and the Hadean Earth, four chapters on the geology of specific cratons, a chapter on life on early Earth, and a concluding chapter on the tectonic framework of early Earth and possible early Earth analogues. Individual contributions address topics including planetary accretion, a review of meteorites on Earth, significance and composition of Hadean protocrust from isotopic and detrital zircon perspectives, composition and dynamics of Archaean mantle and subcontinental mantle lithosphere, the geology of Eo- and Paleoarchean cratons, composition of Archean oceans and hydrothermal environments, evidence and geological settings of early life, mineralisation on early Earth, geology of Venus as a possible analogue for early Earth, the role of mantle plumes in crust formation on early Earth, and a tectonic framework for early Earth.
