Summary:

Seven-part series of programs on the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, once a royal residence of the Ottoman Dynasty, and now a museum. This Ottoman royal residence became a museum after the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. In 1990, its doors were opened to film crews for the first time. This series is based on the latest available historical documentation. Pt. 1 offers the viewer general information about the history of the palace, buildings and functions and the customs and ceremonies of the palace. Pt. 2 shows the inner palace and its pavilions. Pt. 3 shows items which are acknowledged to be the world's richest collection of sacred relics. Pts. 4 and 5 acquaint viewers with the extremely private women's quarters. Pt. 6 describes the three seperate treasuries and their functions that existed within the Ottoman state organizations, and it acquaints the viewer with examples of gold, silver, and copper coinage. Pt. 7 shows masterworks from thousands of Chinese, Japanese and European porcelain.
