- Summary:
- Tristan Corbiere (1845???1875) was a -fundamental influence on Pound, Eliot, and the development of modern poetry in America and Europe. Pound considered him "the most poignant poet since Villon"; yet, sadly, he was virtually unheard of in his lifetime. The chronically invalid son of a robust sea captain, he was an informal formalist whose reputation was established by Paul Verlaine in his seminal study, "Les poetes maudits," With -pervasive self-mocking humor, his poems demonstrate an ironic compassion and a savage sympathy with dogs and underdogs.
- Peter Dale consolidated his reputation as one of Europe's leading poetry translators with his versions of Francois Villon, Jules Laforgue, and his acclaimed terza rima version of Dante's "The Divine Comedy,"
