Summary:

We have witnessed an explosion of research over the past twenty years in the cognitive sciences on figurative language. While there are many books on the topic of metaphor, there is no collection in one volume of the theories and empirical research on irony. This interdisciplinary reader fills that void.

The chapters represent classic empirical and theoretical papers on the great importance of irony in language and thought, each underlining the theme that irony is a fundamental way of thinking about the human experience. Some of the issues considered are the architecture of the language processor, the role of pragmatics in theories of linguistic interpretation, and the relation of language to humor and emotion. The editors contribute a new introductory essay that places each of the articles in their historical context, and suggests the stage for future study on irony in language and thought.
