- Summary:
- Banking reform is a prerequisite for continued high economic growth in China and is a crucial element of China's overall economic reforms. Chinese banks, especially state banks, face a wide ranging series of challenges that not only imperil the health of the banking system, but also endanger the stability of the whole economy. This book argues that because banking problems in China are sensitive, involving top political authorities and even government leaders, it is not possible to collect all the necessary information, let alone make it public, and that therefore a good way of analysing present day challenges is to consider how similar challenges arose and were dealt with in the past. The book provides detailed systematic analysis of the historical development of the Chinese banking industry, focusing in particular on the development of the Bank of China (BOC) in the period 1905 to 1949. It addresses important issues in its evolution, including corporate governance, government intervention, foreign competition and white-collar crime, highlighting how these areas continue to be the problem areas today. It evaluates how the challenges in these areas were met, considers the results of its efforts, and draws lessons for policy-making today. Overall, this book analyses the key issues in Chinese banking reform, providing an historical perspective on these challenges by showing how they have been dealt with in the past.
