Summary:
We are an increasingly urban world, but this does not mean our rural areas are entirely in decline. According to this report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, changes as diverse as those in development, transportation, technology and policy have created a new concept of rural life and its products. They find agriculture to no longer be the backbone of the rural economy of member states, and that trends in rural policies are integrating agriculture and other segments in new development programs. They give a number of case studies form member states, including Canada, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, Mexico and the UK, showing how integrated policies work and analyzing the results, and they offer recommendations for governments to support rural policies that consider both agriculture and the new realities.
