Summary:
This book is an introduction to pulsars, a key area in high energy astrophysics with potential for further fundamental discoveries. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on the intimate connection between rotation-powered pulsars and accretion-powered pulsars -- a cornerstone of modern astrophysics. Early texts on pulsars dealt almost exclusively with rotation-powered ones, while later texts on X-ray binaries concentrated almost entirely on accretion-powered pulsars. This is the first book to treat the two kinds of pulsars on the same footing, stressing the connection between their physical properties, and their evolutionary link. It starts with simple, basic concepts, and ends with the latest developments.
