- In an autobiographical note J. C. Warren claims authorship of this pamphlet. He addressed it to Joseph Story and distributed it "to every member of the whole government, beside pushing it into every part of the community." Cf. Edward Warren. Life of John Collins Warren, 1860, v. 1, p. 105.
- Letter is dated Jan. 1, 1812. Postscript (p. 20) is dated Jan. 13, 1812. In Feb. 1812 Warren published A reply to a pamphlet purporting to be An answer to A letter addressed to a Republican member of the House of Representatives.
