Summary:

The growth of retail concentration has led to concerns that increased retail market power will lead to price distortions in agro-food supply chains that may negatively impact farmers, processors, or consumers. This study (principally authored by Frank Bunte of the Agricultural Economics Research Institute in the Netherlands and Pavel Vavra of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Secretariat) estimates retail market power and related price transmission in the beef, pork, and poultry supply chains of Canada, the Czech Republic, Japan, and the Netherlands. It also offers three case studies examining different farm marketing strategies (retail versus other labeling in the Belgian pork and beef supply chains, producer organization in Dutch horticulture, and contract rearing in livestock production in the European Union) and their impacts on farm size and returns.
