Summary:
The year 2007 marks the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade by parliament. This volume, which includes an illustrated catalogue, has been produced to accompany the parliamentary exhibition being held in Westminster Hall. The essays provide essential information for an understanding of the wider phenomenon of the transatlantic slave trade. The role of black people in England, both before and after 1807, is examined, as is the contribution of enslaved Africans in resisting West Indian slavery. The different approaches to slavery and freedom experienced in Trinidad and Sierra Leone are contrasted, and attention is drawn to persistent - and still continuing - forms of trafficking and enslavement elsewhere in the world. As well as discussing the vital role of public opinion and the economic context, the articles demonstrate the involvement of parliament in the origins and development of the slave trade, as well as in its abolition. The chest or box of African produce that Thomas Clarkson, a leading abolitionist, used as a means of influencing M.P.s and peers is the subject of an article on abolitionist visual art.
This is a special book issue published as a supplement to volume 26 of the Parliamentary History journal.
