- Biography/History:
- The German actor and author Louis Schneider was also a publisher, using the pseudonym "L. W. Both." He published the series "Both's Bühnen-Repertoir."
- Summary:
- The German play is a translation of the French play Kean, by Alexandre Dumas, père. The item is a published copy (Berlin: A. W. Hayn, n.d.; Both's Bühnen-Repertoir No. 60), which has been annotated as a prompt-book. On the last page is a note about the translation that refers to the original play as well as to a previous German translation by A. E. Wollheim. The front fly-leaf is signed "Th. Bloch." Theodor Bloch was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from 1873 until at least the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and also ran a theater lending library. Below Bloch's name is lightly visible "Philadelphia" and what appears to be the date "1838." That writing apparently stems from the previous owner of the book, Serges, whose name is also written on the first page of text (lightly visible). The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his lending library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Pasted to the inside front cover of the book is an undated playbill for a performance of the play under the title "Edmund Kean, oder: Leidenschaft und Genie" (theater and location unknown; a cast list is included). Bound together with the above play is another play: Bajazzo, oder: Hanswurst und seine Familie," by S.E., Both's Bühnen-Repertoir des Auslandes No. 146. Apparently the two books were bound together by Bloch. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
