- Summary:
- Schneider's play is an adaptation of the older German play of the same title by Kotzebue. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, n.d.; Eduard Bloch's Theater-Correspondenz Nr. 88, second edition), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 7 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Peter Falk; Frau Freude; Adelgunde Falk; Johann Falk; Franziska Falk; Gustav Falk; and Senf, Diener. (The play has several additional roles: Charles Faucon, Tanzlehrer; Hippolyt Falk; Gottfried Lebrecht Falk; and Hieronymus Habicht, Zeitungs-Reporter.) The published copy, which probably dates from the early to mid 1880s, has a homemade cover that bears a stamp with the name and address of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia; the title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Two role books have covers made from the company paper of a milliner located in Philadelphia. Three role books bear the names of the actors who played the part (Rappel, Frank Stoertz, and Koenig) but the names could not be placed. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
